2015 6 Gap Century Ride in North Georgia

pre-race bike photo
Pre-race photo. I was one of only a handful of people riding steel and probably the only touring bike with a rear bag rack. My Salsa Vaya Touring rode like a champ for all 8+ hours.
The start to a very long day. A full day of riding over 6 mountains covering104 miles. The riders and volunteers were great, plenty of support from everyone. Had some great conversations while grinding up the mountains. I wish I caught names, but one person was an Afghanistan vet who was so severely injured that a doctor told him he would never run or bike again. He bought a bike 8 weeks ago and was giving one of the most difficult centuries a shot. I really hope he made it.

The problem with a wet summer? A muddy single track C&O Canal for the next 150 miles. Still a lot of fun

After 85 muddy miles we needed food and shelter. "luckily" we stumbled upon the Little Orleans Lodge. A converted hostel, I'm pretty sure the only thing converted was they raised the prices & renamed it a B&B for bikers. However, it was clean and they even fed us for $7 each. I also now know what scrapple is...

The Tea Hose Hostel in Harpers Ferry, WV. One of the coolest parts of the trip. We shared a room with 10 people all hiking the AT. Their stories and happiness was great to share. Stayed up late just talking and listening to stories. Perfect day.

20 miles from DC and the packed mud fried my derailleur and snapped my chain. Luckily, Paul to the rescue! Removed derailleur, pieced chain back together & it was a single gear ride for the rest of the trip!
